Erik Goormaghtigh (Principal Scientific Advisor) is head of the SFMB group and professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles. He is a European leader in the field of FTIR spectroscopy of biological samples, as evidenced by over 230 publications in peer-reviewed journals, overwhelmingly dedicated to FTIR spectroscopy of biological molecules, cells and tissues, 9036 citations and a H factor of 49 (source=SCOPUS), numerous invitations to international congresses and summer schools, and participations in international thesis juries. Over the last 20 years, he has been a regular referee for many foreign institutions and EU-funded projects, as well as numerous scientific journals.

One of his major achievements is writing software dedicated to the analysis of infrared spectra and infrared imaging. This software runs under MatLab and covers a broad range of FTIR spectra analyses, including a secondary structure prediction tool and automatic identification of the different cell types found in cancer histology sections.
